ATTITUDES AND VALUES

How can values be a source of conflict in multicultural context?

In a general context and like for the basic definition, values are beliefs about social or personal conducts, behaviors or actions that determine certain situations or events in our lives. Through values, a culture or a community determines what’s good and what’s bad, or what is accepted and correct and what is not, they are related with the ethical behavior of a community, a culture, a society or even an individuals.

When you are living or experiencing a multicultural context, its possible to reach a conflict because of the cultural differences. For someone a certain action might be good, normal, that person may think its accepted and there's no problem with it so...he did it and that could have harm you or some part of the community and there’s where problems may arise.

I think that when you are facing a multicultural environment you must take as an advantage that is an opportunity where you can learn and share lots of things like knowledge's, traditions, languages, customs, histories and many other elements that are part of a culture, but at the very same time you must be aware to respect those differences that distinguish you from the others.

Respect, for me, is the key to avoid reaching a conflict in a multicultural environment, because its what makes us recognize and be aware of the diversity of values that exist; also because it's the tool to create relationships and make them stronger, where differences exist and where among those differences you still can fell the other person like your brother. Even if you might not agree with the behavior, practice, attitude, action, reason ...you must respect it, as you wish like the others respect yours because for each person its values, moral and ethic are elements that define who you are, how you are and why you are in a certain way.
